Russian Fleet reinforcements

A small Cruiser squadron to reinforce my growing Russian Dystopian Wars fleet.

Disclaimer: I have used AI to generate a more contextural background.
The models themselves are unchanged and are my own work.

Like the rest of my fleet these are an Ebay rescue, and as a bonus they came with nicely magnetised turrets. I've painted them up in more grungy wartime colours to contrast with the rest of my Fleet. I used historical paint schemes again, this time from the Russo-Japanese war. I think of these ships as offensive night patrollers - going out to screen the main force against marauding torpedo boats

This looks good

But this looks better!

The search for more models from the old Spartan Games era continues...

Dystopian Wars Russian Fleet!

I've been planning a Dystopian Wars renaissance and while the new rules by War Cradle Studios are much improved, I much prefer the older Spartan games era ships in their highly detailed resin. These are quite bit smaller in scale to the newer plastic ones and don't mix well so I'm staying with resin, though they are getting harder to find.

Yes the background is AI generated but how cool is it!

A few years ago I bought a painted Prussian Fleet at CANCON Bring & Buy, and James has a few others of his own, namely Brittanic, Covenant of Antarctica and American. New chum David also has some VERY NICE Brittanic plus Italian States fleets too! Surely this would be enough?

So with this post I start another fleet: Russians! Obvious really....

These are an ebay rescue - a modest fleet for a small battle, and I'm naturally planning expansions. All painted in colours of the (real world) Russian Imperial Navy Pacific Fleet of the pre-dreadnought period.

Moskva Class Dreadnought looks like a floating citadel more than a ship! This is large enough to fit in the Admiral's voluminous drink cabinet and dining set.

Borodino class Battleship -the manufacturer proudly states that "this industrial nightmare will forever haunt the ambitions of anyone who dares cross the path of the Russian Coalition".

3 Suvorov Cruisers - "the harsh, unbending anvil against which foes are crushed" - characteristically subtle

9 Novgorod frigates "operate in a radically different fashion to the majority of frigates around the world, boasting a curious circular hull that affords it unmatched manoeuvrability." These guys provide AA and close range support for the bigger ships.

Luckily, its only 14 years since I first spied this release to actually getting some painted and ready...

Painting Notes
Undercoated in White, and washed in thinned Nuln oil (GW)
Contrast for the decks and then planks re painted with Zandri dust (GW)
Hulls worked back to the Celestra White (GW) using a makeup sponge.
Funnel stacks are Averland Sunset washed in Reikland Fleshshade (both GW)

Happy Birthday to me!

While I'm unlikely to enjoy much gaming on my imminent journey,  I took the liberty of treating myself to some new reading material to pack in my trunk.

Should be sufficient to keep one amused  at least a little while methinks!

Dystopian UUUULLLLAAAA!

Thats right, the Martians are coming to Dystopian Wars!
"As gamers of Dystopian Wars you know that the nations and factions of the world are locked in a bitter and gruelling World War with one another, with two major power blocs striving for supremacy, and many lesser nations flocking to support one or other of these great alliances. But what about this question: what would it take to pull all of these warring factions away from each other’s throats, and force them to stand together in common cause? Well we think the answer is a simple one. And it goes something like this: An invasion by a power not of this world, using technology so far advanced that it makes even the greatest achievements of Man seem like child’s play. And to make it worse, these invaders don’t want to simply win the war, they are hell-bent on cleansing the planet of the inferior race they see as infecting the world!"

And so we present the story of the Invasion of Earth by a hostile alien intelligence, known to humanity only as ‘The Invaders’. These mysterious beings command extraordinary powers, but are utterly inimical to all earthly life, seeking only to destroy it and alter the very world itself to suit their own needs. The events of this campaign are speculative – it is not intended to be part of the plotline of the Dystopian Wars game, which we are rapidly developing and expanding in our campaign books and other publications. Instead, it provides an account of just how the human nations of the world might react when faced with such a mysterious, deadly and relentless enemy."

"It is also a chance for you, the players, to pit your forces against the military might of a terrifying new foe from beyond both the stars and human understanding. Or perhaps you will choose to side with the Invaders in their attempt to purge this valuable jewel of a planet of its current unworthy residents. Either way, you must marshal your forces, stand fast and load heavy ammunition – the Invaders are here"

Russian Coalition sighted!

Latest offerings from Spartan

The Juggernaut of the East Arrives!

This summer promises to be an explosive one as the fearsome Russian Coalition, Dystopian Wars seventh devastating nation, enters the ever-escalating war. The battle-hardened Russian Coalition has been one of the most highly-anticipated releases of the year, possessing many powerful and unorthodox models, all crafted with a distinctly industrial aesthetic.

With the release imminent, you can now plan your Russian Coalition land, sea and aerial forces as you seek out your enemies and destroy them using iron and steel forged by this giant nation.

These models will be shipping from August 1st 2012

Battlefield Dominance

Watch with awe as the Kursk Class Land Dreadnought bulldozes through the enemies frontline with frightening and unparalleled might, shaking the very foundations of Dystopian Wars.

Nations should fear the land forces of the Russian Coalition. Vigilence is called for if you want to avoid the armoured vehicles of this nation from crushing you beneath their tracks.

The ships of the Russian Coalition are brutal, with turrets arranged into forward-facing salvos, and hulls matching the angular forward momentum of their deadly style of combat. They are covered with ablative armour plating, forcing enemies to break their Critical Rating before they can even think of damaging them. Not only does this give them an intimidating profile, but it makes them extremely difficult to break down in battle.

Russian Coalition Naval Upgrades

The Russian Coalition dominates an incredible one-sixth of the world's landmass, and in order to defend these lands their military must be highly adaptable. Its skyships are capable of holding their own against the aerial forces of any nation, and its navy has ships armed with a multitude of torpedo-breakers and rocket-jammers - devastating weapons that ensure the Russian Coalition is as much a threat in the sea as they are on land.

Perhaps the most interesting and visually awe-inspiring string to the Russian Coalition's bow is the ability of the beastly Kostroma Class Battle Carrier to create glaciers. These hazardous clumps of ice have been the bane of naval fleets for many years. Now, the resourceful and wily Russian Coalition have found a way to utilise them in battle.

Combining their large, industrious behemoths with their speedy, smaller vessels is the key to success with the Russian Coalition. With Land Dreadnoughts, Repair Vehicles, Skyships and plenty more surprises soon to be at your disposal, it is up to you to command the Juggernaut of the East to victory.

Dystopian Wars: French sneak-peaks

Spartan Games have released some concept pics of their new range of DW models: the Republique of France:
Bretagne Class Cruiser
The dawn of the 19th century brought with it a series of catastrophic events that stripped France of its status as an imperial power. Having reached, as they saw it, the very lowest depths of despair, the French spent the following decades dedicating all their efforts into rebuilding their nation and its glory.
Couronne Class Battle Carrier
Now, as the 1870s dawn, and the world is gripped by crisis, France sees at last the chance to regain its rightful place as a great power. The self-satisfied, naysayers and complacent, at home and abroad, who in the past have sought to write off the Republique's fortunes are soon to be proven very wrong.
Focault 'R-6' Class Medium Tank and Hotch 'FT-12' Class Small Tank
The French military forces are split into three services: l'Armee de Terre, l'Armee de Mer and l'Armee de l'Air: literally, the Armies of the Land, Sea and Sky. The Navy and Air Forces also include their own integral marine forces, known as Mousquetons, after the compact automatic carbines that are their main armament.
 'B-17' Class Land Ship
L'Armee de Terre is split into the Regular and Reserve Armies and the Heavy Assault Command. The Regular Army is formed of Armoured Regiments; each incorporates its own artillery and infantry elements. The Armoured Regiments form the backbone of the Land Army.
Lyon Class Frigate

The French Navy is divided into three fleets: Atlantic, Channel and Mediterranean, with the strongest forces assigned to the latter two. The Navy also incorporates its own aerial element, the Maritime Air Force, which is responsible for the fighter and light bomber squadrons employed on the Navy's battle-carriers.
Furieux Class Medium Flyer
The third of the Republique's armed services is the most glamorous and also very cosmopolitan. The French air service, focussed as it is on France itself, employs large numbers of conventional short ranged aeroplanes, organised into fighter and bomber squadrons (escadrons de chasse and bombardier respectively) grouped within Air Combat Wings. This part of the air force also incorporates the heavy bomber squadrons.

Dystopian Wars Mini Preview

Mark from "Conflict in Colour" has very kindly sent me these pics of new minis from Spartan Games's Dystopian Wars.  These are the British Carrier and Japanese Battleship, which he painted.  Good show old bean!

Neil from Spartan Games also informs me that these are pre-release models, which means they are made from sample resin, and not release quality.  Yes, that means the ones we will be able to buy will be even better!

Dystopian Wars

The next major line from Spartan Games, this is scheduled for release in November 2010 with four great nations from this war ravaged world: Kingdom of Britannia, Empire of the Blazing Sun, Prussian Empire and the Federated States of America.

This is a game involving airships, land ironclads and of course mighty naval platforms.  Here is the Prussian "Storm Cloud Carrier"
