Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) - 14th Foot

The regiment traces its lineage to 1685 during the Monmouth Rebellion, subsequently fighting in Jacobite Rebellions, including Culloden, and later in the New World colonies as the 14th Regiment of Foot, where it involved in the Boston Massacre of 1770. Extensive engagements during the AWI, Napoleonic Wars and the Crimea followed, and afterwards service in Australia and New Zealand (including the Maori Wars).

During the 1881 Childers reforms Regimental numbers were dropped, and the regiment’s county association changed so it now became The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment).

These interesting pics (from The Regiment magazine issue 44) show the concurrent us of both traditional uniforms, as well as moving to the Khaki field dress

The Regiment Issue 45 had these additional pictures:

In 1958 the West Yorks were merged with the East Yorks to become the Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire, based at Imphal Barracks, York.

In the early 2000s I was serving with the Royal Navy in the Type 42 Destroyer HMS York, which was twinned with the Regiment as a sister unit. I stayed at Imphal barracks on a couple of occasions and enjoyed their hospitality (and still have some of the unit insignia gifted to me).

In 2006 the Prince of Wales Yorks further amalgamated with The Green Howards, and The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment to form The Yorkshire Regiment.

A little known fact is that the Regiment also served on British Field Army on Mars during the Shastapsh campaign, and will be joining my Space 1889 force!
