Bill's Nefs

BillChuck at TMP has posted some pic of his British and French Aeronef starter sets.
I particularly like the larger bases he has crafted, which look more resilient than the big GW style ones I have used for my BCs and above.

You can find his pics here:

Hey, wow, I must be special. :)

For the base, I drew up a 2" hex in a cad program (cadstd, which has a free to download version available) including marks for where to drill the holes. I printed out the template and taped it to a sheet of .040" (1mm) plastic sheet using double-sided tape. I drilled holes for the uprights and scored around the edges of the hex, then snapped it out of the sheet along the scored lines.

A small finishing nail was pressed through each hole, then the hex was glued down onto the plastic sheet again. Once that dried, I scored around the hex and snapped it out of the sheet again, giving me a base about 2mm thick.

Having done all that, I decided it wasn't worth that much effort. :) So, Sunday I ordered a bunch of 1.5 inch wooden bases and flexsteel base bottoms from Litko. I'll drill holes much like the 2" prototype above, then countersink the bottom for the nail heads. They will be held in place with superglue and the base bottom sheet.

There will, of course, be more photos as well.

Thanks for the detail on how you did it Bill.

The problem with bases is that you can find yourself mucking about with them more than the model going on it! Sounds like you have a good compromise ready though and I shall look forward to seeing how it pans out.

cheers!
