French Land Cruiser unveiled!

Our planned game this week, to debut the French Grenadier Garde I painted earlier this year, unfortunately had to be cancelled when my mate got sick. Instead I invested time into a long stalled project... a French "Land Cruiser"!

Having trialled the design, the first four production vehicles were deployed to the German border to bolster the defences. Another pair were subsequently deployed to North Africa for expeditionary campaigning, and field tests were conducted in arid conditions.  With those lessons implemented, model Number 7 aka "Sept Chanceux" (Lucky Seven) was assigned to Franciase Corps expéditionnaire du Mars.

This was one of those models that stays in the cupboard for years awaiting the perfect time, and then rushed through the painting process in under 24 hrs.  After all, a model finished to "good enough" standard is far better than "Parade Ready" years too late (or so I have found out, years too late...!)

Fitted with a large calibre, short barrelled naval cannon

This model is a pre-release one that my friend allowed me to have while he implemented some improvements. The body is resin with the legs, weapon and mast in metal.  The model came with 6 different weapon options, so they are temporarily mounted depending on the field commander's needs! To add a bit more of the "Battleship on land" feel and add some colour, I made minor modifications to the mast to rig it, and then made some naval signal flags (still no wireless radio in 1889 you know!)

Overall I am very happy with how it came out - thanks Drew for allowing me to have this model ahead of time (no release date currently)

Basing for Land Ironclads

I saw this very impressive array of 2mm Napoleonic armies over at the excellent "Lead doesn't Bleed" blog today and it got me thinking about options to base LI units, and infantry in particular.  When I started my own infantry units I went with positioning the figure blocks in different formations for easy recognition, but I think this is a much better and more effective way to go.  I'd be interested in other options that might be out there too.

Steam Powered Tanks

I came across this thread at the World of Tanks forum (via the Space 1889 Yahoo Group), which has some very interesting pic of developmental tanks which I hadn't come across before and the attempted application of steam for power.  Focused on US developments, its well worth checking out and has some great modelling inspiration.

Hearts of Oak - Part 3

This is the land ship HMS FEARNOUGHT.  It is a small, three wheeled steam contraption which can be landed to support Royal Navy's Armoured Landing parties ashore.

It has variable armament with either a water cooled machine gun or, as shown here, a light field gun which increases the weight of the vehicle overall.

The model is by Ironclad Miniatures with a resin hull and turret, and white metal cast wheels and gun.
I have remodelled the back end with a stratch built funnel and support struts.

Acoustic Terrain

Brigade Models have released their acoustic mirror terrain packs:

Welcome to the start of our range of Land Ironclads (and by extension, Aeronef) terrain.

This first two items are ideal for both ranges - a pair of acoustic mirrors (also known as listening ears), based on the real WWI-era installation at Denge in Kent. They make perfect targets for bombing raids or ground assaults, or give you early warning of impending air-raids.

Rules for Aeronef can be found in issue 42 of Ragnarok if you're able to get hold of a copy. (and yes, I have a copy!)

Tiny Troublesome Fellas...

View Halloo Chaps! With the cook busy making some festive brandy pies and basting the goose under the Memsahib's careful instruction I retired after a lunch of crubeens and beetroot to the study and was browsing the interweb on my personal Babbage Machine when I discovered a new business organisation in the Little Wars market called Troublemaker Games.

[EDIT: Their new website is here: http://www.troublemakergames.co.uk/t300.htm]

Perusing their wares it appears they make available for purchase tiny models in what is known as 10 mil scale where the little soldiers are apparently just 10mm tall (one must confess that I am not quite sure what 10 mil is, sounds bloomin' Froggy to me, but apparently it is just under 1/2 an inch so bally small eh what?). Their range is some form of Wells inspired Land Ironclads scientific romance type with stalwart British types fighting the beastly Hun!
If one is quick one could get the man servant to purchase some for you before the festive period and snowy weather. Pip Pip!Ho!

When The Navy Walked

When the Navy Walked - Core Rules 2 Note: Thank you for purchasing When the Navy Walked! You have the core book in the ground level of a new venture that I started because I wanted to be able to share my ideas. When the Navy Walked is more than just a game or an idea it is a springboard for imagination. The Victorian Science Fiction genre has always been one that attracted creative individuals. The rules in this book should allow you to have many fun battles using the Great Powers. Look for coming supplements such as scenario and army books that will be designed to expand the alternate universe and add rich elements to the game!

His Majesty's Secret Weapon

Report from our Special Correspondent now, currently with His Majesty's forces on the Western Front:

"Somewhere near Cambrai, France....
Rumours have been circulating for some time amongst the troops at the front that a startling and powerful new weapon was to be unleashed during the coming offensive. This correspondent has heard many such tales during his time here, and most are nothing but idle gossip amongst the old sweats, however, this morning at 04:00, I saw with my own eyes the incredible truth behind these tall tales.
Crossing unhindered by the torn and scarred surface of No Man's land, a steel leviathan crawled, nay wormed it's way forward, bristling with guns that spat flame in the direction of the Prussian lines. A many-sectioned body of segmented iron casemates, atop a whirling line of metal tracks made up the whole of this incredible new weapon, impervious to enemy fire, and able to cross the deepest trench or obstacle; some wag at the depot had painted a leering face at the front of the beast, and it resembled nothing more than some great, lumbering iron caterpillar as it tore into the enemy positions.

Due to the understandably stringent nature of military censorship here at the battle zone, I am unable to accompany this report with a photograph, however a talented artist amongst the troops hereabouts has drawn a stunningly accurate representation of this wonder, and I include it here for the reader's perusal; the panicked reaction of the enemy, when faced with this awesome contraption, is most faithfully recreated...."

Oh, alright then it's actually a contemporary postcard by the Tuck's company from it's Oilette series, subtitled "some tank!", artist unknown; a comic view of the no doubt mysterious nature of the armoured vehicles then being used to break the deadlock of the First World War.
Certainly gives ideas for a possible scratch-build for use with Land Ironclads....perhaps a whole class of 'organic' weaponry?
